How to Get Dog Pee Out of the Carpet

Sadly, something that happens to all pets, sometimes even humans, is accidents. It can happen to new puppies still learning potty training, it can happen to older dogs, and it can occur when your fully house trained dog gets a little too excited! It has happened to the best of us. But, even accepting that that accident happened, it is not fun having to clean up the mess afterwards, especially if you have carpet in your home. We’re going to share some of our tested and trusted ways to clean dog pee out of the carpet and help you get rid of the smell!

How to Clean Dog Pee from Carpet

There are so many products, tips, tricks, and cleaners out there for helping get rid of dog pee in carpets, and it can be very overwhelming to find one that works. But we’re here to guide you! We have researched many products and have some holy grail solutions to help you clean dog pee from your carpet, and they really work.

Our first remedy is a DIY dog pee spray at home cleaning product. All you need is water, white vinegar and dish detergent. First, mix 2 cups of warm water with 1 tablespoon of dish detergent. Then add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar. Mix this together. Dip a sponge into this mixture and gently blot the pee stain or pee area until the stain is gone. If the stain isn’t going away, add a couple drops of ammonia and keep blotting!

Another DIY remedy is just using a 1:1 ratio of Distilled White Vinegar and water. Mix it together and put in a spray bottle. Spray this over the affected area, let it sit and blot dry.

If you are looking for something even stronger, we recommend Carbona Oxy-Powered pet Stain & Odor Remover and Rocco & Roxie’s Stain and Odor Eliminator. These are great options that will get the job done!

You can use all these mixtures and products on your carpet, as well as fabric-covered furniture (trust us, we’ve been there before with dog pee on the couch).

How to Get Dried Dog Pee out of Carpet

If you aren’t dealing with a fresh accident and are worried you can’t get a dried dog pee stain out of the carpet, don’t be! These remedies will work for both fresh and old carpet stains. Use the above methods and try letting the mixture sit for 15 minutes for some extra action! If the above products and methods didn’t work, our recommendation is to rent a carpet cleaner machine! These heavy duty machines will help to suck up anything and everything and give your carpet a full refresh. You can rent these machines at Lowes, Home Depot or even find some older ones on Facebook Marketplace!

How to Get Rid of Dog Pee Smell

If you’ve already cleaned up the mess but have noticed the smell won’t go away, or even want to preemptively keep away any odors, your best friend will be baking Soda. This is a great ingredient to eliminate odor. Sprinkle some onto the affected areas and let it sit for 15 minutes or more (sometimes even overnight for extreme measures). Once the area is dry, vacuum the carpet to remove any excess product!

We’ve all been here before and it happens. These are our tested and trusted methods for making everything feel fresh and clean again. Let us know if you try them and how they work for you and your pets!
