Australian Shepherds: What You Need to Know

Australian or ‘Aussie’ Shepherds are known for their fluffy, colorfully spotted coats and high-energy personalities. This medium-sized breed is one of our favorites, and for a good reason. They have a primarily white coat, topped with varying patterns of spots in all different colors. Their pointed ears fold forward, very adorably we may add, over their face. Their most notable feature though is their eyes. Aussie Shepherds are known for having bright blue or brown eyes. They have lots of energy and lots of love to give. If you live an active lifestyle and have a yard - then you’ll get along well with an Australian Shepherd. If you’re looking to get an Aussie Shepherd, we’re here to tell you everything you need to know!

How Big Do Australian Shepherds Get:

Australian Shepherds are a medium-sized dog breed. They aren’t little, but they aren’t super big and tall either. Male Aussies will get to be about 55 - 70 pounds and 20 - 23 inches tall. Female Aussies will be about 35 - 55 pounds and 18 - 21 inches tall. Males will always be a bit heavier than the female Aussie!

How Long Do Australian Shepherds Live:

Australian Shepherds have a great lifespan. Living anywhere from 13 - 15 years! This breed is generally pretty healthy, but they do require an active lifestyle to keep them in good health and keep them happy.

How Much Are Australian Shepherds:

When it comes to getting a dog, we always recommend adoption or rescuing your dog. You can start by searching your local shelters and adoption centers to see if you can find your dream companion. But, we also understand that it isn’t always easy finding specific breeds.

If you have to go through a breeder to get your Australian Shepherd, we recommend doing your research and finding a reputable and trusted breeder. Buying an Australian Shepherd won’t be cheap, but it won’t break the bank either. You can get an Aussie for anywhere from $600 to $1,800 depending on your location and the breeder.

Living with Australian Shepherds:

As we’ve mentioned, Australian Shepherds are extremely active dogs. Almost a never-ending amount of energy. They were born to run free and herd. They pair best with someone who also lives an active lifestyle and can take them on daily walks, has a fenced backyard with a yard to let them run around in, and even better if they live by the water to let them swim in!

While this is all fun, the Australian Shepherd does require lots of training. Training from a very young age will be key to a happy Aussie. Because of their high energy and herding background, they love to dart at other animals, pull on leashes, run and maybe even destroy things at home if left alone too long. But, luckily for you, all of this is easily avoided if properly trained.

Due to their background, they aim to please and because of how smart they are, they will catch onto training quickly and get the hang of it. They want to do a good job, and all the training will be worth it in the end. You will be able to enjoy their cuddles and love and not worry about any torn furniture!

Overall, the Australian Shepherd is an amazing dog breed. Aside from their beautiful features and fluffy coat - they have amazing personalities and boundless energy to keep you active and entertained. Whether you’re single, have a partner or have a family, the Australian Shepherd will make a great addition to your life. They get along great with kids, other dogs and pets and as long as they have somewhere to run around - they will be happy.

There is so much more to know about this breed and we are more than happy to keep writing about this cheerful breed. If you’re ready to get an Aussie, we hope this article helped, and there is more to come about the great Australian Sheperd!
